Location Description

Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, West Virginia, is a 25-bed acute care facility serving the local and tourist population of the New River Gorge area, located 50 miles outside Charleston, the state capital.

The historic town of Lewisburg and The Greenbrier Hotel are each within one hour's drive from Oak Hill.

Plateau Medical offers 24-hour emergency care, intensive care and critical care units, CT, Nuclear Medicine, women's services, physical therapy, and orthopedics to the Fayette County community of 47,000.

Following the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad through the gorge in the 1870s, the gorge area in and around Oak Hill became the world's top producer of coal. Today, tourism is the major contributor of local revenue. Oak Hill is located seven miles south of the New River Gorge Bridge, the highest bridge East of the Mississippi. On the third Saturday in October, people from all over converge on the area for "Bridge Day", West Virginia's largest one-day festival.

A rugged, white water river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. New River Gorge National River was established in 1978 to conserve and protect 53 miles of the New River as a free-flowing waterway. More than one million tourists a year visit the park, which encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the river.

Oak Hill and the surrounding area also offers other outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, fishing, bicycling, skiing and more. Whatever your outdoor interest, Oak Hill's seasonal climate and enticing scenery has something to offer you.

In addition to natural attractions, Oak Hill and the surrounding area are rich in cultural and natural history, with an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities. Only ten minutes outside Oak Hill, in Beckley, is Tamarack, the nation's first and only collection of West Virginia handmade crafts, arts, and cuisine, which showcases "The Best of West Virginia." A one-of-a-kind shopping and cultural experience, Tamarack features 59,000 square feet of retail area with the work of more than 2,000 juried West Virginia artists.

Fayette County boasts seven high schools throughout the county. Mountain View Christian School and St. Peter and Paul's Catholic School offer private educations for young people in the area. Three local colleges - WVU Tech, Mountain State University, and Bluefield State College - offer higher education opportunities to the community.
